Arensky Variations on a Theme of Tchaikovsky Op. 35a
Shostakovich Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings, Op. 33
Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings in C major, Op. 48
We move to Russia for the next in this year’s series with music by Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky. Anton Arensky’s tribute sets a melody from the fifth of Tchaikovsky’s Sixteen Children’s Songs in a set of variations exploring the lyrical melody. Shostakovich’s concerto fuses a bewildering array of styles and genres, embracing jazz, folk tunes and quotations from Beethoven and Haydn as well as referencing some of Shostakovich’s own work and is paired with Tchaikovsky’s graceful and classically-styled Serenade for Strings.
