The 100-strong City of Bristol Choir and Bristol Ensemble present a celebration of love in words and music.
Marking the 60th birthday of Jonathan Dove, the concert features two of his most recent works performed in the presence of the composer: Our revels now are ended, a setting of the immortal speech from Shakespeare’s The Tempestand Sappho Sings, a suite of passionate and atmospheric songs with poetry by the archaic female Greek poet Sappho.
Words from The Merchant of Veniceare set in Vaughan Williams’ iconic Serenade to Musicand, in his great hymn of praise and love to all creation, Rejoice in the Lamb, Britten brings to life Christopher Smart’s idiosyncratic poem with character and vitality.
Completing the programme is Vaughan Williams’ wonderful piece for string orchestra in a version made exactly 100 years ago.
